時間と経験

私も単純。国際会議で東京に行ったDCの友人からお土産をもらってハッピー。超多忙だったはずなのにと、その心遣いがうれしい。私がDCに立ち寄った時には、忙しかったのにランチに付き合ってくれた。

もらって一番嬉しいのは、時間と経験。だから、何か一緒にしたり、会って時を過ごせるのが私には最高のプレゼントだ。次は食べ物とか使ったらなくなってしまう消耗品。それ以外はほとんど何もいらない。

我家ではクリスマスや誕生日の"物"のプレゼントはしない。子供達がサンタを信じていた幼い頃は少しやったけれど、その後は「〜〜をしてあげる」とかの手書きギフト券に代わった。数年前私が子供達にあげたギフト券は「往復航空券一枚、世界中どこでも、条件は何をしに行くか私を説得できることと、きちんと調べて経済的なチケットを買うことの２点」。

末息子は高校の夏休みにこれでスイスとロンドンに行った。長男は大学卒業した時に日本へ。娘はまだ使っていないけれど「まだあのギフト券有効よね」とたまにチェックしてくるので、そのうちに世界一周とか言い出すかもしれない。ちょっと覚悟しておこう(苦笑)。

時間と経験。手に取って確認できる物は何もないのに、時が経つにつれて価値が上がってくるプレゼント。これからも、心を込めてあげたりもらったりしていきたい。

Franconia - Green, N TX local, and great tasting German beer

Dennis, a transplant from Germany, knows how to brew great beer in a super energy/resource efficient way!

I've heard about Franconia before. "Somewhere in McKinney, there is this cool local brewer a guy from Germany runs. They offer tours of their brewery and tasting events weekly."

Of course we did the tasting, but an hour before a regular beer tour on one Saturday, Dennis showed us, NTREG (North Texas Renewable Energy Group), around his energy efficient brewery.

Here are some highlights - IIRC:
His brewery does not generate trash.
Until recently, there was no dumpster on site.
Current dumpster is for glasses and cups, not for beer brewing operation. It gets emptied rarely.
He uses steam from brewing operation to make all needed hot water via heat exchanger. No HWH.
He has 20 kW solar carport, which supplies most of his electricity needs. No battery yet, but Green Mountain helps to mitigate that.
Used vegetable oil generates supplemental electricity when needed. Perfectly Green in McKinney manages the micro-power system shown behind Dennis.
Beer cooler section of his brewery has foam insulation with R value of 55. If power were gone for a long time, the cooler could stay in chilling temperature for three days.

We expected nothing but great tasting German beer from his operation and did not get disappointed.

How much water you use during winter unproportionally affects your water bill

If you wonder why your water bill stubbornly stays on the high side even though you think you are conserving water, this might help explain...at least for those of you who live in Plano.

My latest water/utility bill shows only a quarter is charged for water usage. (This, of course, means reducing water consumption would help little to lower my water bill. Not a good system to encourage people to conserve water, but that's a different discussion.)

More than half of the bill is for sewer. For anyone who wants to reduce his water bill, now is the time to act. Why? Because Plano uses "Water Quarter Average" to calculate your sewer rate and apply that for the entire year. Details are here and here. Basically, how much water you use during last three winters, including current, will determine how much sewer rate you pay for the coming year.

My sewer rate is high because I enjoy taking a hot bath in the cold winter night. That Japanese habit is not something I want to give up easily...I need to figure out other ways to use water less.

Build coalitions(collaborations) for "Future of Anything"

I was lucky enough to attend a program called "A Better Path from Farm to Fork: Policy Solutions for the Future of Food" at the National Geographic office while in Washington DC.

When opportunity like this comes up I won't pass up. Although I am in cleantech and energy, not in food, my son, sister-in-law, and niece are working in nutrition and food fields. And in a big picture - food, energy, environment - everything is interconnected. Knowing what's going on in other fields won't hurt.

The program was keynoted by U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow who authored 2014 Farm Bill which represented $1 trillion in spending over 10 years. I don't know much about this bill and its implications. But I heard it was a long-stalled bill that passed on a rare bipartisan vote (68-32) this spring while most everything else was gridlocked in Capitol Hill.

"Ability to build coalitions to get things done" is what she is known for, her bio says. That's an undervalued but very much needed ability to improve anything and tackle any problems we face.

DCで一番美しい建物

DCでちょっと時間があったので、何の気なしにLibrary of Congressに立ち寄ってみて驚いた。まばゆいばかりに美しい。本がぎっしり詰ったドライな所を予想していた私は目を見張った。

Docentの話によると、このJefferson Bldgはアメリカで初めて電気を取り入れた建物だとか。

設計した２人は建設途中で追われ、その後は工事を担っていたThomas Lincoln Caseyが取り仕切り、終盤、大学を出たばかりだった自分の息子に内装を一切任せたという。

お父さんの元で自由にできたのか、若さなのか、もう思う存分隅から隅まで装飾してある。裏話を聞くとふふっと笑いたくなるけれど、ここまで自信たっぷりに飾ってあると迫力がある。

後で聞いたら、DCで一番美しい建物なのだそうで、"That's my favorite building!"と何人かに言われた。

ちょうど(来年の1月19日まで)800年前のマグナカルタをイギリスから借りて展示してあったり、ルイスとクラークが使った地図、ドイツで印刷プレス機ができ始めた頃のGutenberg Bible、Thomas Jeffersonの蔵書(このLibrary of Congressの元になった)があったりと、見応えがあった。

それにしても、建築やアートはイタリアの影響、法律はイギリスから、機械技術はドイツのものと、いろんな所の秀でた知識や技を旺盛に取り入れて混ぜ合わせてアメリカはできて来たのね、と改めて思わされた。

もちろん図書館なので、膨大なボリュームの本をはじめ資料を抱えていて、国内はもとより世界中からリサーチしたい人が出入りしているとか。隣のビルに行って、IDを出せば、資料を借り出すのに必要なカードをいとも簡単に作ってくれる(２年間有効)。この次の機会の為にと、しっかり作ってもらった(笑)。

GDT knows how to throw a party.

GDT's holiday party - titled "Giddy Up" - was awesome. I used to think office parties were somewhat stuffy get-together. Not this one.

People were dressed up/down everything from cowboy hat and boots, sparkly dress to regular sweat suit.

But, they were ALL talking and laughing together! Some in groups and others to each other. No wall flowers to be seen. What a energy and vibe!

No wonder this is the company voted for one of the top places to work for in DFW in multiple years. A guy was telling me how unconventional his interview with the head of the company was three years ago, and how much he loved working here.

Western band and dance troupe with a breakdancer jazzed up 5~600 people. Some challenged mechanical bull and punching bag machine.

Big screens played several video skits employees created - all mocking, edgy and hilarious. Instead of raising eyebrows, everyone broke into laugh and applauded - a proof of positively great corporate culture. Hats off.

Japan's public-private diplomatic effort came to town

The Japan America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth (JASDFW) hosted a unique delegation from Japan last Monday in downtown Dallas.

Five members of the delegation were a university student, a "female" banker, a retired general, a former businessman, and a former diplomat. All were well spoken, friendly, and even funny!

What's so unique about it? You may ask...

Japanese are famously homogeneous people. And we tend to form ever finer sub-groups of people with more similar characteristics.

In and out of Japan, the kind of diversified groups, such as this delegation, are rare. It appears odd, which is great by the way, and very welcoming.

Maybe, just maybe, Japan is finally starting to realize the value of opening up and mixing up. Japan may be changing. Or at least it realizes it has to change. I am hopeful...

Dallas Makerspace - community workshop and loboratory

"The Dallas Makerspace is..., shared community workshop and laboratory. We are an organized group of local artists, engineers, makers, and thinkers who work together to provide tools and learning resources to the public."

I'd heard about tool libraries in California and other places, but didn't know Dallas had such a place. 

There were many people in there working on things, walking in and out, talking, and generating lots of energy. There was a guy designing prototypes for new concentrated solar design and making models with 3D printer. 80 hours a week - that's how much he devotes for that project.

If you have ideas to make something, or just want to learn, tinker and try out anything without buying many tools in Dallas, this is the place to go.

ハンモックってそんなにいいの？

キャンプ好きの間では、テントに見切りをつけてハンモックに乗り換える人が多いのだとか。

言われてみれば、下がでこぼこだろうが、湿っていようが大丈夫。地面をはう虫や動物だって避けられる。雨が降っても、ちゃんとフライを張っておけば、乾いたままで快適といいことずくめ。

ウェブで情報集めをしていた時、たまに顔を出すNorth Texas Outdoorsで、ハンモックの体験講習してくれると言うので行ってみた。


12以上セットアップがあったかな？みんなご自慢のハンモックを、より快適により簡単に使えるようハックしててお役立ち情報満載だった。

いろいろ聞いて回って、虫に刺されやすい私はバグネットが縫い付けられているタイプを探すのがベストとわかった。

その他もらったアイディアは。。。

フライを地面に固定するペグは、MSR GroundHog Stakeがお勧め。

Whoopie Slingsや冬用のダウンカバーは作ろうとがんばらないで買った方が良い。

ハンモックについてくるフライのほとんどは使い勝手が良くないので、ENOなどのしっかりしたのを別途買う。"Well worth it."だそう。

車のサンシェードをハンモックとシュラフの間におくと保温効果がある、など。

一通り揃えたら、ハンモックキャンプに行って、雨が降りそうになければ、フライなしで星空を眺めながら眠ってみたいものだ。

Group discount on a massive scale

More than 100,000 people will have opportunities to buy or lease solar PV system at discount.

Beautiful collaboration effort between WWF and Geostellar that could benefit employees of four large corporations (and everybody else until the end of the year. Just use the code "solarmojo".) According to Geostellar, the average base cost of a system is $3 per watt - which is good. I hope many, especially those who are in areas with high electricity rates, would find this attractive and sign up.

Having helped Solarize Plano, I know group purchase works. It gives you leverage to attract cheaper and better purchase options. It also helps you to learn from your trustworthy community members. As we are starting to hear stories about a few “bad apple” installers even in our area, it pays to ask around.

Words of caution…

Before getting a new solar system, better to find out how much electricity you use, and take simple and cheap measures to reduce your consumption. You may be surprised to find out you will need much smaller system that will cost less. 

Above screenshot shows Geostellar estimates we use 1,641kWh per average month. We actually use half of that. They are correct though. During the first 12 months after we moved in, we used just about the same as they estimated. Since then we reduced our consumption by half. Our 4.25kW system, instead of 9.14kW they estimated, was enough to cover 65% of our usage and costed far far less.

EVの電磁放射

ダラスに、ダ・ビンチというプレスクールがある。ウェイティングリストも長いらしく、妊娠中から申し込む人もいるくらいの人気だそう。

ここの校舎は、先週のDFW Solar Tourのおすすめサイトの一つ。オーナー夫婦が、構想設計に関わっただけでなく、使用素材の一つ一つを調査して選び、工事にもずっと立ち会ったという。校内を一周まわりして、簡単に説明してもらっただけで、小さい子どもたちの健康の為に、オーナー夫妻がどれほど心を込めて作った建物かよくわかった。

テスラの協賛で、ツアー中、この学校の前で「ドライブ体験」（テストドライブとは法律上言えないらしい）があった。予想以上の大人気で、予約が溢れ、テスラはモデルSを4台出して、15分単位で10時から5時までフル回転させていた。（結局、それだけでは足りず、先週の予約に溢れた人たちの為に、今日もドライブ体験をやっていた。）

さて、先週ツアーが終わった後、スクールオーナーの奥様が、テスラ車内の電磁放射量を図りたいといって、スタッフと乗って出て行ったので、今日、ツアーのうちあげで会った時に、結果を聞いてみたら。。。

社内の床部分では少し検知されたものの、シート部分（座って膝から上の部分では）ほとんど何も検知されなかった。これは、前も後ろの座席も同じだったらしい。

オーナー夫婦が今乗っているトヨタのプリウス（2台）は、前座席ではほとんど検知されず、後ろ座席でわずかながら気になる量が検知されるとのこと。だたし、子供でカーシートとかに乗って、座る位置が上に上がればそれだけ薄れるから気にならないとの事だった。

それよりも気になるのは、携帯やラップトップなんだそう。

ラップトップは、名の通りラップの上で使わず、机の上に置くべき（ということはデスクトップ？）

携帯は耳に直接当てないで、イヤフォンで通話する。ポケットに入れないで、左にような特別ケースに入れるようアドバイスされた。（これはご主人のケース。このサイトで購入したとのこと。）

携帯は、通話が入ってくる前に、瞬間的に多量の電磁放射するのだとか。私自身はそこまで気にしないけれど、息子や娘達➖これから子孫を残そうという人たちは、reproductive systemにどう影響するか分からないので、ポケットに入れるのはやめて他の方法を考えるよう言ってみようと思う。

エボラパニック

リベリアでエボラに感染し、ダラスに来て発症した男性は亡くなり、二次感染の疑いがあったフリスコの男性の検査結果はネガティブだった。

空港での検査を始めるとか、米軍がアフリカに出向くとか、スペインやオーストラリアのケースも報道されていて、中には、ちょっとパニックになっている人もいるようだ。

でも、私達一般人が、今ここでできることは。。。
できるだけ信頼できる情報源を探して、知識を得る。
石鹸で手を洗う！
普段から健康な生活習慣を身につけて基礎体力をつけておく。
そして、一番大事なのは、恐れ憂いで貴重な時間をムダにしないで、今やっていることに専念することじゃないかと思う。

医療や行政関連で、体を張ってエボラに対応している人たちは本当に大変だと思う、ありがたい。

It seems so no-brainer to place trash and recycle bins side-by-side with clear signs like this. Unfortunately, it's still a rarity around here. We have more work to do...

ダラスの新しいファーマーズ・マーケット

ダラスに新しいファーマーズ・マーケットがオープンするというので、日本人会の秋祭りに行く前に立ち寄ってみた。　The Vickery Meadow Local Marketというらしい。場所は75とNW Hwyの東側にあるHalf Price Book Storeのパーキング。

フード・トラックがあったり、黙々と手編みしながら店番をする人がいたりと、Lower GreenvilleやWhite Rock Lakeに近い場所柄からか、雰囲気がちょっとオースティンぽくって楽しい。

"Where soap meets art!" というキャッチフレーズを持つお目当ての手作りソープ屋さん Dallas Soap Company を見つけていくつか購入。 使うのがちょっともったいないくらいかわいい。


普通オンラインでしか売ってないので、友達用に買う前に、目で見て、手に取ってみて、匂いを嗅いでみたかったのよね。お店のオーナーに質問もできたし、満足。

お祭りで友達と会う約束をしていたので、急いでマーケットを出ようとして気づいたのが、テントから吊るされたプラントのお店。

"These are called Koke-dama." と声をかけられ、予想してなかったのと発音が微妙で、「あ〜、苔玉」と気づくのに2秒位かかった。白いシャツを着たオーナーのパティーさんは日系二世の方。趣味で始めたのをサイドビジネスに格上げ中とか。

私は、床に物をできるだけ置きたくないので、こうやって天井や壁から吊るせるのは大好きだ。今回は選ぶ暇がなくてパスしたけれど、この次は何か一つ買ってみようかな。

Solar PV on my roof

I came home and found solar PV panels on my roof! I was not fully expecting the installer, Axium Solar, to be back today because Plano Balloon Festival limited the access to our neighborhood.

They are beautiful. I am excited. Once all the wiring is done and the final permit is issued, these panels should start producing and cover roughly 65% of our current annual electricity consumption.

I am all in to promote renewable/clean energy and energy efficiency.

Although my system is small (4.25 kW DC), I feel great to personally contribute to distributed sustainable energy production.

Through "Solarize Plano Project", so far we have helped about 40 households, including mine, in Plano to install solar PV systems at discount.

I am also helping to organize DFW Solar Tour coming on October 4th. And being the first solar house in our neighborhood, I am hoping to inspire others to follow. I know, before long, solar and other renewable energy will become norm.

Kei Nishikori, one man one name

I am Japanese and I like tennis. So, naturally I am elated Kei Nishikori is advancing to US Open final. Coached by Michael Chang, another great Asian player, he is the first Asian man to reach that level.

I've read somewhere that his parents wanted Kei to be a citizen of the world, and named him “Kei” which is easy to pronounce and can be used globally.

That resonates with my own wish and thinking for my children. I knew I wanted to give “one” name to my child that he/she could use anywhere and anytime as it is. No switching back and forth between say American name and Japanese name. No changing from childhood name to adult name. No confusion for which nickname to use and what real name is...One name that represents who he/she is no matter what.

Kei seems very comfortable in his own skin. His confidence radiates. I am sure that comes from knowing what he wants and more importantly knowing who he is. I am so looking forward to watching how he plays and carries himself through the grand final on coming Monday.

巣立ったあと

この夏は、どこも涼しい所に出かけなかった。コロラドのロッキーも見ずじまいでレイバーデイ。旅行したいウズウズが溜まりそうだったので、思い立ってDallas Arboretum に出かけた。

残暑厳しいし、花はそれほど咲いていないだろうと思っていたら、涼しげに水に浮かぶ睡蓮の池がある。傍に足を止めて、しばらく見とれていた。

White Rock Lakeが見渡せる高台の、大きなピーカンの樹の下でベンチに腰掛けていると、近くでキャッキャッと楽しそうな声。お父さんが芝の上で赤ちゃんとグルグル転がって遊んでる。そのまわりをお兄ちゃんが走り回って楽しそう。ふと、うちの子たちもあんなに嬉しそうに笑ってたな〜と思ったら、涙ぐんでしまった。

子育ても精一杯やれて何も後悔はない。今は、3人共自力で道を開拓し始めてる時なので、前にも増して、自分からあまり電話かけたりしないようにしてるのだけれど、こんなことでしんみりなるなんてちょっと我慢しすぎなかな。

Klyde Warren Park

Klyde Warren Parkであった"Decks in the Park"に寄ってきた。

DJやミュージシャンがパビリオンで演奏してるのを横目に、アクロヨガをやっているカップルや、LEDフラフープのグループの合間をぬって集う若者、ヨチヨチ歩きの子供達、ゆったりお散歩のワンちゃん達と、芝の上に座ってくつろいで、周りを見てるだけで楽しい。

ダラスのダウンタウンとアップタウンをまたがったこの公園ができてから何度も足を運んでいる。いつ来ても程よく賑わっている(殺伐でもギューギューでもない、いわゆるゴーディロック)。車や建物から出て、まわりの人々を肌を感じることができる空間って大事。あちこちにwalkableのエリアができつつあるのは、それをみんなが欲してるから。Klyde Warrenの成功で、車社会のダラスでもその動きがもっと進むと思う。

People with conviction - solar PV ban

People with conviction are tough. 

They strongly believe what they believe not because others have taught them, but because they have studied, explored, examined and came to the conclusion on their own. 

Once they get there, they no longer seek approval from others. In fact, they get fired up when faced with unreasonable oppositions and defend their belief with the facts they have dug up.

In a recent Dallas Morning News article titled "Texas law lets developers ban solar panels while subdivisions are growing", a solar advocate assembled cases against builders and developers even though the current law was on their side. He believed the law was an unjust loophole. An antiquated initial responses he received from a powerful builder and a HOA fueled his determination to put the things straight. He was unfazed by some voices of caution - mine included. He pushed it through. The article went out. It received loud responses, mostly supportive. He gave convincing rebuttals with references to the negative comments...and the article is spreading with more support.

A hat tip, or rather a bow, to people with strong convictions. They are the ones who disrupt and start changing the society.

お盆とお墓参り

お盆といえば、お墓参り。

小さい頃から、寄宿舎のある高校に入るまで、よくお墓参りをしていた。私は男3人兄弟の中の女一人。私が生まれた時、祖母がお墓を守ってくれる子ができたと喜んだらしい。

小さい頃は母に連れられて、ちょっと大きくなってからは一人で、頻繁に行ってはお水を取り替え、お掃除をし、お線香を上げて、丁寧にご先祖様にご報告をしてを繰り返していた。

当時、家の数代のお墓は、雨に濡れないように屋根がついていた。近いとは言っても坂の上だったし、お花を持ちながら、子供の足で20分くらいはかかっていた。よそのお墓のそばを通り抜ける間はさすがに怖かったけれど、屋根の下にたどり着くとホッとして、守られているような気がして、お墓参りをしている間ずっと暖かかったのを覚えている。

あれから長い時が経って、いろんな所に行き、今は地球の裏側に住んでめったにお墓参りもしていない。お墓も整備が進んで、今は実家のすぐそばの納骨堂にみんな収まっている。

私は天国や地獄とか、死後の世界を信じているわけじゃないし、お盆にご先祖様の魂が帰ってくるとも思えない。でも、おじいちゃんやおばあちゃん、特に父は生きていた時、私のことを大切に思ってくれていたのは確か。理屈に合わない勝手な解釈だけど、今はどこにいても見守ってもらえていると思えるから不思議。そして、昔お墓参りをしていた時のように、あったかい気持ちになれるからありがたい。

Slimming down an energy hog

My house is one of the guinea pigs in Dallas-Fort Worth area for electricity usage monitoring study by Pecan Street. They just released a new mobile app called "Pumpkin Pie".

According to this app, we use roughly half of electricity compared to similar houses in our area. It gives more details such as the usage data in kWh and $ per breaker. I would like to dig into that when I have more time.

During the past 12 months, we used roughly kWh8,650 (kWh720/m) and paid $860 ($72/m). For a regular spec house (2 story, 3000 sf) built by a production builder (read - built to be an energy hogger), it is good.

We did some cheap DIY energy efficiency updates using stuffs from Home Depot and Lowes several years ago. Nothing fancy. Most likely we have recouped the cost over one summer.

稀にない才能があって、素晴らしい成功を収めた人が自殺やオーバードーズでなくなると、残念さが更に増す。ウィットニー・ヒューストンの時もそうだった。

どうしてっ思っても、きっと本人や似た経験をした人でないとわからないのだろう。まわりがどうヘルプしても、どうしようもない時だってあるのだろう。

死んで天国に行ったのに、自殺した奥さんを探しに地獄に降りていった彼の映画「What Dreams May Come」の、地獄の映像が、ホラー系がダメな私には強烈に残っている。

落ち込むことはあっても、鬱になったことがない私には理解できないけれど、とにかく、安らかに眠ってと言いたい。そして、今まで素晴らしい映画をたくさん残してくれてありがとう。

熱中症の季節

暑い暑いと言われるダラスに20年住んではじめて、先日熱中症を目の前にした。ご本人は、医者に脱水症と言われたようで、数時間後には回復され、ほっと安心。

でも、その時近くにいた私は、どう応急処置をするのかわからず戸惑った。動かしていいものか、救急車を呼ぶべきか（アメリカは医療費が高いから躊躇する）、氷は手に入れたものの、どこを冷やせばいいのかも知らなかった。今年の夏はそれほど猛暑ではないけれど、これからも暑い夏は巡ってくるので、今後の為に、基礎知識は持っておくべきとつくづく思った。

NHKのサイトにあった左のイラストによると、暑い所にいたかどうか、意識があるか、自分で水が飲めるかでまず大まかな判断をする。氷などで冷やすところは、首筋、脇の下、内腿など。予防の方は、まず十分に水を飲むこと、そして、無理をし過ぎないこと。

長男がハイスクールでテニスをしていた頃、平気で一番暑い1時から4時とかに練習に行っていて、よく持つなと思っていた。でも、確かに、2ガロンくらい入るドリンクサーモに、氷をごっそり入れて持って行っていた。若さと慣れもあるけれど、あの氷水で体を中から冷やしていたから大丈夫だったのね、きっと。

Damaged CREE bulbs

We have been using CFL bulbs for our kitchen canned lights for several years now. When two of them stopped working a couple months ago, I ordered CREE bulbs via Home Depot website.

The local Home Depot did not carry flood light type and online order was the only way to get them. They were not cheap, but they were "CREE". I did not mind to pay more for the quality.

A package arrived and out came these...A pack of four bulbs, although individually packaged, all broken. The strange thing was it appeared bulbs were secured well in the box and there were no signs of dent nor damage on the shipping box. Does this mean someone packed already damaged bulbs and approved for shipment???

I would not know. I ended up taking them to the local Home Depot, received the refund, and then went to Costco and bought LED bulbs from the different manufacture. It probably was not CREE's problem, but I would think twice before ordering them again.

Upcycling idea from IKEA

There is one catalog (i.e. junk mail) I don't mind receiving. The annual book from IKEA.

This year's version has pretty and fun decoration/organization ideas as usual. But, there is more. It suggests to upcycle used plastic bottles to grow herbs!

My master bath has a good size East facing window above the tub. I have been wanted to grow small plants vertically inside the window. This upside down bottles would work great there.

By leaving the caps slightly loose, excess water can slowly drain. I just need to place something on the window sill to let the drips to drain into the tub. Simple, easy and almost free! This will be one of my fall project.

Thanks IKEA for the idea! I sure will come back to your store when I need something for my house :)

Flower Mound council approved "not so anti-solar" guidelines

City of Flower Mound removed majority of anti-solar requirements originally proposed before approving the amendment. A big win for solar. Many thanks to those who contributed the effort.

 

そもそも、どうしてソーラーパネルの設置を市が規制しようとしたのか？

直接のきっかけは、ビデオにあるネットゼロの家のソーラーパネルを、HOA(Home Owner's Association　自治会のようなもの)が取り外せと要求したこと。テキサス州の法律で、HOAはソーラーパネル設置を禁止できないことにはなっているが、条件をつけたり、設置を困難にしようと思えばする方法はある。（なんでそんなことまでするのかと言うのは、別の話）

意外が出やすい環境

たまに目を通すFarnam Streetのブログにこんな文章があった。

“The world is awash in complexity. Nearly every decision we make is uncertain. There is no one way to look at uncertainty. There are as many ways of seeing, experiencing and representing problems as there are people. Each person, in turn, brings their own mental models.

（中略）

Integrators attempt to hold two, often contradictory, ways of seeing the world. Rather than fearing the ensuing tension they embrace it.

This is reminiscent of F. Scott Fitzgerald, who said:

The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function. One should, for example, be able to see that things are hopeless yet be determined to make them otherwise.”

言わなくてもわかるモノカルチャーの中はなんといっても楽だし、なにか極めるにはいい環境だと思うけれど、衝突するのを避けることにばかり気を使っていると新しいアイディアは出てきにくい。

バイ（マルチ）カルチャーの中にいると、見聞きすることが、今まで学んできたことと相いれないとか交錯しあうって当たり前。同時に相反する考えを持ちつつ事を進めていくのは日常のこと。

自分の頭のなかで、いろんな意見が火花を散らせられたら、行き詰ることも少ないだろうし、斬新なアイディアが飛び出しやすい環境ができるんじゃないかと思う。

歩行者信号ボタン

やっぱり。ダラス市内の信号の歩行者ボタンは飾り？だった。

あの押しても押されたのかどうか、全く反応のない二昔前のボタン。それに、どの方向に渡るためにどのボタンを押せばいいのかわからない所に設置してあったりして、ネグレクトされているのは明らかだった。

10年くらい前までは車社会で、ダウンタウンで働いていない人が街を歩きまわることはあまりなかった。でも、最近、特にクライド・ウォーレン・パークやペロー・ミュージーアムが出来てからは賑やかになったし、他所から来る人だけでなく、ダウンタウンやアップタウンに住む人だって増えているのだから、歩行者への考慮はますます大事になってくると思う。

Urban Solar Ready housing developments...just started in Dallas

We happened to be in south Dallas yesterday. That was a rare occasion and I wanted to maximize my time down there. Before heading back to Plano, we drove around Oak Cliff to search two home development sites I had been wanted to check out since last fall. There was also a recent Dallas Morning News article about this development a few days ago and I thought we might be able to see a couple of model homes we could walk around...

Well, instead of model homes, we found bare sites. We saw a few lots with some foundation works. It looked like it would be a while before we could walk into finished houses.

I have no plan to move out of Plano anytime soon. However, houses being build around us are still big and none are solar ready. These houses are designed to be in urban setting and supposed to be super energy efficient. They are not only solar ready but also come with Solar City supplied solar PV system on their roof tops. I hope these developments to success and we would have more solar ready houses being built in North Texas!

WycliffのSlow Bone BBQ

ダラスダウンタウンに行ったついでに立ち寄ったのは、WycliffとIrving BlvdにあるSlow Bone BBQ。コンクリートのテーブルはオーナーの友人の知り合いが作ったとか。彼は趣味でモダンな絵を書いたり、コンクリートのジーンズ・スカルプチャーなど作る。お店のお手洗い入り口にもちゃっかり飾ってあった。ステッチまではいっていて凝ってる。いかにもテキサスらしい。

今日はいつものテキサスの夏らしく暑かった。摂氏40度。こんな時にレストランに入ると冷房が効きすぎて冷えてしまうので、いつもジャッケトとか持ち歩くのだけど、うれしいことに、ここではタンクトップのままで快適で、持ってきたカーディガンは腰に巻いたまま使わずに済んだ。

おまけに天井を見上げると、スプレーフォームの断熱材が吹きつけてあり、節電に気を使ってる様子が伺える。それだけでも気に入ってしまった。

お店はこじんまりと整頓されていて、キッチンも清潔そう。また近くに来たら立ち寄ろう。

Well designed bucket

During the recent interview by Stephen Colbert, when asked why he opened his Tesla patents up to public, which some people describe as "giving the patent away", Musk responded, “If we’re all in a ship together and there’s some holes in the ship, and we’re bailing water out, and we have a great design for a bucket, even if we’re bailing out way better than everybody else, we should probably share the bucket design.”

いつもの散歩道で、マッドハッターに出会った。この辺りにはウサギもたくさん住んでるから不思議じゃない、か。

「不思議な国のアリス」って、小さな劇場でどうやって大きくなったり小さくなったりを見せるのだろう。


娘が小さい時、同じシアターに参加したことがある。あのときはディズニーの「ムーラン」で、当時は予算がなかったのか、シアターにあったコスチュームはボロボロだった。コオロギ役の娘があてがわれたのは、穴だらけの熊の着ぐるみ。ちょっとかわいそうだったから、ミシンを出してあたらしいコスチュームを縫った。アンテナはフェルトをロールして作った。。。なつかしい。

アリスを演じるこの子たちの衣装はプロ並みに凝ってる。舞台設備とかも期待できるかも。
